Final Portfolio

The following images depict a wide range of subject matter. Many of the photos are in color, a few are black and white, but the scenes were all lined up and picked out with the same intent. The use of formalism is something I have embraced since my interest in photography began. I choose these 10 images from the many I shot during my Intro to Digital Photography class because they best represent my natural style.

Assignment 11: HDR

On a sunny day when some areas are in bright sunlight and others are left in darkness, it can be hard to decide where to properly expose. In these instances, I find it useful to make HDRs. Often though, I see people go way overboard with them until they look like crazy digital illustrations. This has become a huge pet peeve of mine. When most people think of HDR now, they think of those saturated drawing-like images. A lot of people may not agree with me, but I think they should be more subtle.

Assignment 10: Panoramas

I love the large scale size of panoramic photos and all the details you can find in them. I generally look longer at them for this reason. The first two I took at Frick Park. I wish I had more time there because the conditions were perfect. Luckily, I had a small window of opportunity before work a week later and was able to take the rest at Marshall Lake in North Park.

Assignment 9: 3-D Images

I would've liked to have gotten around and taken some 3-D landscapes, but I was busy and the weather sucked as usual and so I had to make do with my house and backyard. When I started studying 3-D images online, I realized they look just like dioramas; like each object was just a piece of paper layered in front of the other. Most of these don't work as well as I had hoped, but the bottom image of the swing seems to reproduce the 3-D effect pretty well.

(3-D GLASSES REQUIRED)

Statuettes

Bird Feeder

 Jungle Gym #1

 Jungle Gym #2

 Swing

 Jungle Gym #3

Assignment 8: Multi-Exposure

Multiple exposure is something I have played with once or twice before, but not for a long time. With the images below I tried to keep some kind of connection with the paired photos: A larger reproduction, a shared subject matter, and things that I found walking in the city.

Lightbulb

Irish Princess

Lion

Saint Francis

 Painter

 Newspaper Face

Midterm

Over the course of the last several assignments, I began experimenting with different point-of-views with ordinary objects and things I see all the time. I realized that it is possible to take completely different pictures of the same thing or place by simply shooting at differents times or from different directions. I also grew interested in the notion that ideas, feelings, and interesting visual elements can be created by using lines, shapes, and colors; which can then be combined with this forced perspective to send a message/feeling. The following photos are taken from previous assignments and are examples of me experimenting with this idea.

Assignment 7: Abstract

Abstraction is something I always try to incorporate in my photos and is a little more in my league compared to portraits, something I don't do often or particularly like doing. So when I set out to take some abstract today, I had in mind that I wanted to use a lot of lines, shapes, and continuity. It actually turned out to be a nice day with a clear blue sky, no clouds, and the sun slicing right through the city. As a result,  harsh lighting and shadows became another element in my final pictures. They also share a kind of contrast between plant life and building life.
